KOLANUT

Kola nut (also known as cola nut) is grown, traded, consumed or ritualized in every nook and cranny of the Nigerian society. Kola nuts could indeed pass as a symbol of Nigerian unity. From time immemorial, the caffeine-rich nuts of the evergreen kola tree have been a part of Nigerian culture. Once used as a currency in parts of present-day Nigeria, Kola, whose trees belong to cocoa family, is a significant cash crop in many part of the West African coast. Kola Nut In Nigeria, it is primarily cultivated among the southwestern Yoruba’s who also account for nearly all of Nigeria’s cocoa production. Kola nuts never quite attained the prominence accorded cocoa during the nations agricultural boom era, despite been a great source of commercial gain as a vital ingredient in the manufacture of globally consumed cola-based beverages. Fresh Kola Nut in its pod The significance of Kola nuts in Nigeria can be demonstrated – quite curiously – by considering the manner in which it is grown, sold, a

Tribal Markings

Practiced for a variety of reasons ranging from tribal identification to protection from evil spirits, the culture of facial and bodily scarification, or ‘tribal makings’- a term loosely but popularly used by many Africans in reference to various forms of tattooing or body mutilation, has been a part of many African societies for generations. And it is still widely practiced till this day. Nearly all of Africa’s ancient kingdoms had scarification traditions as evidenced by archaeological finds of realistic sculptures bearing intricately-etched facial marks. The fact that such traditions had survived for millennia along with their accompanying rituals and ceremonies, has led many to believe that the tradition may be as old as man himself.  Ancient Greeks and Egyptian text also reveal that the practice of facial and /or bodily scarification was by no means restricted to the African continent alone; though the classic form of the practice has all but disappeared in other parts of the glob

Africa Vs COVID-19

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a communicable respiratory disease caused by a new strain of virus that causes illness in humans. Scientists are still learning about the disease, and thinks that the virus began in animals; at some point, one or more human acquired infection from an animal, and those infected humans began transmitting infection to other humans. Money moves; Forbes richest celebrities 2020

The world’s highest-paid celebrities earned a combined $6.1 billion before taxes and fees, a $200 million drop from 2019, after the global pandemic shuttered stadiums and silenced performances around the world. The decline was the first since 2016, the year after Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao earned nearly half a billion dollars between them from the richest fight in boxing history. But even with Covid-19 lurking--and America on fire in every sense of the word following the murder of George Floyd--the show still went on. The top earning celebrities were Kylie Jenner and Kanye West, who brought in $590 million and $170 million, respectively. West collected most of his earnings from his Yeezy sneakers deal with Adidas, while Jenner’s payday came from selling a 51% stake in her cosmetics firm to Coty in January. Kylie Jenner  While she had exaggerated over the years about the size of her business, the money she pulled in from the deal was real--enough to rank as one of the bigg

The Rise of Afrobeats

The rise of Afrobeats can only be attributed to one thing; Dynamism! Of its sound and craft. Today you hear a song that sounds like dancehall, next you hear a song that sounds like pop. Another time you hear a song with a bit of jazz, but having African rhythm and vibe. Afrobeats! That’s what it’s called. Afrobeats is a term for contemporary music made predominantly in West Africa and its surroundings. It is less of a style and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds and rhythm. Afrobeats is an offshoot of Afrobeat , a genre of music created and popularized by Nigeria’s Fela Kuti and Tony Allen , Fela’s musical director and drummer. Tony Allen Afrobeat is a music genre which involves the combination of elements from West African music styles, such as Fuji music and Highlife mixed with American funk and Jazz influences, with a focus on chanted vocals, complex intersecting rhythm, and percussion.  The name was partially borne out of an attempt to distinguish Fela Kuti&#

The African Renaissance

Africa over the past few years has become the center of attraction for major global businesses, travel and tourism enthusiast, music, food lovers, and the likes. This is as a result of her people’s determination to change the narrative and sentiments regarding her history, development and achievements. There is a shift in direction which is driven by a new found consciousness among Africans, that the job can only get done if it is accompanied with the will. As this consciousness spreads across the continent, more strides are achieved by Africans either Big or Small, Old or Young, virtually across all levels and facets of the African society. The African market In the world of business we see the Big boys in their field from across the world, compete for their share of the African market; A market of about 1.2 billion-person with a growing purchasing power, and is home to the world’s largest free trade area.   Africa’s economic growth is stabilizing and is expected to gr
